The Gladstone region, which is situated on the central Queensland coast, is 550 kilometres north of the capital of Queensland, Brisbane, and is one of the most industrial intense in Australia. The region houses two alumina refineries, an aluminium smelter, a coal-fired power station, a cement plant, a chemical plant, a proposed shale oil mine and processing plant and a major port.
The Gladstone Industrial Area makes a significant contribution to the Australian economy generating 30% of Queensland’s and 10% of Australia’s total volume of exports per annum valued at over $A4 billion. There are five main current synergies comprising alternative fuels, water re-use, waste recycling, material substitution and caustic soda supplement.
The following regional synergy examples are documented in this database:
By-Product Synergies
- Alternative Fuels
- Power Station Fly Ash as Cement Additive
- Waste Transfer Facility at Alumina Refinery
