Spent Caustic Material as a Replacement for Process Chemicals Used in Paper Production

Summary

In the final stages of evaluation and close to implementation is the use of spent caustic material from the Lloydminster Heavy Oil Upgrader (energy production) to replace process chemicals used in the Weyerhaeuser’s KRAFT pulp paper mill in Grande Prairie. Currently the oil and grease contaminated sodium hydroxide materials are disposed of by Husky Energy Inc. via deep well injection. Weyerhaeuser previously purchased high purity sodium hydroxide solution at considerable cost from an international supplier.
