The municipality of Guayama on the southern coast of Puerto Rico covers 169 km2 and has a population of approximately 42,000. The current industrial profile began to develop in the 1950s, as Guayama primarily had before been agricultural with some light manufacturing. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US, thus sharing many of its laws and business practices. Spontaneous development began in 2002 when a coal-fired power plant was brought online.
