Energy Recovery from Chicken Litter

Summary

The Energy Power Resources (EPR) power station located in Fife derives its fuel source from poultry litter. It is the third facility opened in the UK by EPR to utilise renewable fuels to generate electricity. The plant utilises fluidised bed combustion technology to enable the efficient combustion of 110,000 tonnes/annum poultry litter. This creates 81 GWh/yr of electricity, enough power to supply 20,000 homes. A by-product of this combustion is an ash rich in phosphates and potassium, which is used as a high quality fertiliser.
