Water Issues Paper (1A1)
Project Status: Complete
Project Participants: University of Queensland
Project Leader: David Brereton (University of Queensland)
This project produced an "issues paper" on the theme of water in the minerals industry. The focus of the paper was strategic, rather than technical, with the emphasis being on synthesising existing knowledge, rather than presenting "new" data.
The paper is firmly grounded in an understanding of current industry practice and will include industrial examples of:
- Specific aspects of the life cycle of water within operations - water consumption, identification of processes requiring water, extent of water recycling and wastewater treatment, regulatory requirements;
- Current innovation in the field of water management;
- Motivations for managing water and the actions taken to ensure sustainable water management;
- Costs and benefits of sustainable water management.
The research objectives were to :
- Produce a concise, intellectually rigorous and accessible document on water issues for an industry audience.
- Identify the major challenges and constraints regarding sustainable water management in the minerals industry.
- Provide a clear picture of future research priorities for enabling sustainable water management across the minerals industry.
