Improving Kiln Technology (AMIRA P581A) (2B3)

Project Status: Complete
Project Participants: CSIRO, Rio Tinto, AMIRA
Project Leader: Phil Schwarz (CSIRO)

This project concentrated on two main objectives: developing an advanced modelling capability for the dynamics of the bed, and updating a process model for rotary kilns, SmartKiln. The advanced modelling capability was developed through a coordinated program of experimental, DEM and CFD efforts.

At the conclusion of the project, the sponsors have access to a valuable isothermal CFD/DEM modelling capability at CSIRO that can assist kiln optimisation, as well as delivery of the flexible process model, SmartKiln, which enables rapid evaluation of changes to kiln design or operating conditions. It is planned to deliver access to a much more powerful modelling capability and advisory process control capability. These combined deliverables will enable optimisation and improved control of rotary kiln operations.
