Capturing Regional Synergies in Kwinana Industrial Area (3B1)

This project supported the development and implementation of regional synergies between industrial operations in the Kwinana Industrial Area and of these operations with the surrounding communities and other activities. This aimed to assist the industries in Kwinana to achieve greater efficiencies in energy, water and materials consumption and reductions in waste and emission generation.

This project provided hands-on support to the companies in the Kwinana Industrial Area, to develop, evaluate and implement synergy opportunities, and communicate the gains in the overall eco-efficiency of the area. The project delivered preliminary business plans for the realisation of new synergy opportunities in the Kwinana Industrial Area.

The research objectives were to:

• Collect input/output data for principal materials, energy and water streams for companies operating in and around Kwinana, and synthesise these data into an area wide resource and process flow database.
• Identify and assess further resource synergy opportunities in the Kwinana area that improve the overall eco-efficiency of the area.
• Support operating companies and the KIC with the development and evaluation (including trials) of promising resource synergy opportunities.
• Through the connection with project 3A1 the research will also contribute to the development and trialling of a regional eco-efficiency opportunity assessment methodology, the evaluation of synergy technology needs and opportunities and the documentation of case studies.
