

Welcome to the last edition of the CSRP Newsletter for 2005. CSRP wishes you and your families a happy and peaceful festive season and a successful and Happy New Year.
At the AGM, held on the 8 th December, 2 new Directors were elected to the Governing Board. We welcome Mr David Olney, Alcoa World Alumina, as a Director representing Industry, and Ms Erica Smyth , as an Independent Director, to the Board. Dr Ray Shaw, Rio Tinto (Industry Representative), Dr Bart Folink (Research Representative) and Mrs Karen Field (Independent) were re-elected to the Board.
The workshop looking at sustainability methodologies and tools used by industry, the CSRP Annual General Meeting and the Participants Forum held between 6 th and 8 th December were extremely successful with many research and industry personnel attending from across Australia .
Participants’ Forum
The Participants’ Forum consisted of a series of talks as well as discussions on Program 3 and Program 4 topics. Prof Rene van Berkel (Program 3 Manager) and Dr Sharif Jahanshahi (Program 4 Manager) provided information on all activities within their respective Programs. Feedback to date has been very positive.
Sustainability Workshop
The sustainability workshop was attended by over 50 research and industry personnel. The presentation and workshop structure of the day, as well as the sharing of real lif examples, proved very successful, with discussion during each session of the day being lively and informative.
On December 13 th 20 teachers toured Alcoa’s Huntly Mine Site. , the restoration areas there and the Pinjarra refinery. The all day event was hosted by CSRP, Murdoch and Alcoa. The tour was such a success that there are plans to have another Alcoa teacher tour in April.
The revised Commercialisation and Utilisation Plan has now been approved by DEST and endorsed by the Board. It will be placed in CRC Centric in due course.
An MOU with The University of Western Australia was signed on the 2 nd December. The purpose of this is to allow members of CSRP and UWA to explore opportunities for further collaboration in various areas interest in sustainable resource processing. Discussions are already underway with Assoc Prof Jack Barrett from the School of Civil and Resource Engineering.
Welcome to Di Nichols, who is our latest PhD student. Di is working on a project tentatively entitled “Assessment of Teacher Professional Development as a change agent for the mining and metallurgical industries” and will be supervised by Dr Darrell Fisher (Curtin University) and Dr Dan Churach.
Enrolled at Curtin University, Di will be studying part-time and is currently a teacher at the Biloela State High School, Queensland. She will also be assisting in the assessment of the 5B1 and 5B3 projects (Teacher Professional Development in Perth and Gladstone respectively).
