DEST Third Year Review - Thank you from Stevan Green

I would like to extend my appreciation to all those who participated in the recent DEST 3 rd Year Review. The review has been very successful and the panel made mention of the excellent participation and involvement of so many members of CSRP. The results of the review are being considered by the CSRP Board at their next meeting in December. I want again thank everyone for their input and effort in the review.

Material, Minerals and Metal Ecology 2006

Stevan Green presented a keynote address sustainability and CSRP at the Material, Minerals and Metal Ecology 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa.  The address focused on CSRP and outlined our research agenda and some of our achievements to date from incremental improvements through to significant step changes.  It also covered the development of tools and methodologies to aid in making better choices on sustainability.  The keynote address was received very well and it presented an excellent opportunity to promote CSRP to a wider international audience.

Fauxite© Trialled at Future Science 2006

A new teacher professional development workshop was trialled at Future Science 2006. Because the conditions used in the Bayer process are too hazardous to operate in school laboratories, teachers and students are prevented from having direct observation of this process. Nick Welham and Ken Seymour of Murdoch University and Dan Churach , CSRP Education Manager, have developed what they call Fauxite© or fake bauxite. This allows for a simple laboratory simulation which mimics the whole process at room temperature.

The workshop Alumina Production from Bauxite by the Bayer Process was presented to participants of the Science Teachers Association of Western Australia (STAWA) annual professional development day at Murdoch University on 24 November. Two other workshops were on offer at the same event:

Project 5B2 Presentation

Tony Rickards of the Science and Mathematics Education Centre at Curtin University of Technology and Dan Churach of CSRP presented a poster session entitled “Identifying Clear Science Education Pathways to Science Career Choices: A Mining and Minerals Industry Perspective” to the Western Australian Science Education Association (WASEA) annual conference. The presentation involved work being carried out on Project 5B2 (www.csrp.com.au/projects/5b2.html) The event was held at Edith Cowen University , Mount Lawley Campus on 30 November.
